[Juba, South Sudan, TCT] The Bishop of the Diocese of Rejaf in the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, Rt. Rev. Edward Tombe Mathew Oliver, made a historic pastoral visit to Good Shepherd Academy (GSA) on Sunday, March 22. This was his first official visit to the institution. The bishop was accompanied by the Diocesan Secretary, the Archdeacon of Rejaf East Archdeaconry, the canon for theological education, along with other senior clergy.  The visit began with an opening prayer led by Rev. Josephine Mwagangi, a Kenyan missionary chaplain at the institution’s chapel.  Fr. John Chol Daau, founder and director of the Good Shepherd Educational Foundation and its affiliate, GSA, then welcomed the bishop. In his remarks, he expressed deep gratitude for the bishop’s pastoral care and presence.

A Message of Renewal and Hope

Drawing from Ezekiel 37:1–14, Romans 8:8–11, and John 11:1–16, Bishop Edward expounded and emphasized themes of spiritual renewal, the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit, and the hope of resurrection in Christ Jesus. He encouraged the congregation to remain steadfast in faith, trusting in God’s power to bring life even to situations that appear spiritually dry and lifeless.

A Vibrant Worship Experience

The liturgical celebration was marked by active participation from staff, students, and pupils of GSA. The Academy choir performed incredibly and enriched the service with praise and worship, contributing to a deeply engaging and spiritually uplifting atmosphere.

Recognition of Transformational Ministry

In his remarks, Bishop Edward expressed joy for the impactful ministry of Good Shepherd Academy. He commended the institution’s Christ-centered mission, particularly its commitment to supporting more than 200 orphans and vulnerable individuals. “This initiative is a genuine expression of God’s work and a living testimony of Christian charity in action,” he said.

Continued Partnership and Growth

In response, Fr. John Chol Daau formally invited the bishop to preside over the upcoming graduation ceremony of the top class, scheduled for the second week of December. He also highlighted the Academy’s expanding ministries and outreach programs, including a series of Christian education seminars, leadership and peacebuilding training initiatives, vocational training, and skills development programs targeting women’s empowerment. He concluded by acknowledging that the growth and success of Good Shepherd Academy have been made possible through strong partnerships and collaboration with friends and partners working together for the advancement of God’s kingdom in South Sudan and beyond.

With the citizens of the youngest nation of the world, South Sudan, seemingly torn between apprehension and optimism against the backdrop of reports that the vice-president designate, Dr. Riek Machar wants the long-awaited November 12 date for the Transitional Government postponed yet again by another six months, the Catholic Bishops have delivered a message of hope and called on the citizens to “keep heads high.”
